Thursday found us listening to a collective story about autumn, enjoying the beautiful colours of changing leaves and working together as a large group to craft Maple Leaf Crowns, and begin decorating our school yard for Halloween. Students crafted with leaves to make what they could, and learned how to make a large spider web, while hearing about spiders, silk and spinerettes. Lots of play occurred after the web was created!
Our hike led us through most of Kiwanis park for swinging, playing, and lots of foraging. We learned that mullein and rose hips can be made into a tea to support lung healing, and infections.
Today we worked together to create a fire using foraged spruce branches from the chopped down tree in our parking lot. Spruce burns very well due to the oils in the sap so we had a big, beautiful fire! We spent time discussing fire safety and what elements feed and suffocate a fire.
Our afternoon took us on a rainy adventure through the park and into the nearby neighbourhood. We found new trees and bushes that we hadn’t seen before, including a female Gingko Baloba tree. We foraged some of the fruit to observe the seed and planted it in our backyard.
