THURSDAY
On Thursday we had much fun together with a foraging hike to collect items for iced ornaments, checking out the thin ice in the puddles and using all kinds of imagination in the backyard. We mixed up our daily schedule and had our sharing board earlier in the day to accommodate our foraging creations along with bird feeders for our backyard friends while we are all away on holidays.
Students lined muffin tons with foraged items and string to be "iced" (frozen outside overnight), then moved on to "larding up" some pinecones (which led to conversation about where lard comes from) and coating them with bird seed. Students were able to identify most of the seeds: corn, cracked corn, millet, sunflower seeds, and oats.
We pulled out the last of our party foods from Monday (hummus, mild salsa, corn chips, potato chips and dill pickle dip) and with some encouragement to consume their lunches, everyone was able to enjoy the extra snacks.
Lots of outdoor play ensued with the "troll under the bridge game" as all ages made play together <3
FRIDAY
On Friday students got busy after opening circle with a scavenger hunt for stars around the playground. Each star had actions on it that Ethan supported Lola and Oakley to read and follow. There were nine stars to find and everyone had a blast pretending to bunnies, catching snowflakes on their tongues and more.
Later in the morning we foraged large sticks for some community crafting of stars to decorate the playground for the holidays while we are away. We made a HUGE star with some amazing teamwork! Students decided it was best placed against our decorated fence. They then decorated the fence with the frozen ornaments we foraged on Thursday and left out to freeze overnight.
During our lunch break Jessica surprised everyone with fresh baked gingerbread cookies topped with coconut whipping cream! They were a hit!
After lunch, we headed out for a big hike in the park armed with chalk spray paints to decorate the freshly fallen snow. Everyone had a blast decorating!!
We completed our last day of 2024 with our last sharing board of the year!
Happy holidays one and all!
